Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a dental procedure aimed at giving patients a beautiful, bright, and sparkling smile.
When the prerequisites for whitening are met and the protocols for the bleaching materials are strictly followed, the procedure is completely safe for both the patient and their teeth.
Prerequisites for Whitening
Healthy teeth: Teeth should be free of cracks, fractures, cavities, or gum/periodontal problems. Any existing issues must be treated before whitening.
No prosthetic work on the front teeth: Whitening materials only act on natural tooth surfaces and cannot change the color of crowns or bridges. If a patient desires a whiter smile despite existing prosthetics, the solution is to replace the prosthetic work before whitening and then whiten the surrounding natural teeth to match.
Professional cleaning first: Teeth should be free of tartar, plaque, and surface stains.
Methods of Whitening
There are three main approaches:
In-office whitening
At-home whitening
Combination of the two (recommended for optimal results)
In-Office Whitening
In this method, the dentist applies the whitening material directly to the teeth.
The procedure is painless, requires no anesthesia, and lasts approximately 2 hours. Teeth can become 2–3 shades whiter in a single session.
This method is ideal for patients seeking quick results before a social event such as a graduation, birthday, professional photoshoot, or wedding.
At-Home Whitening
For at-home whitening, custom trays (night guards) are created by our dental technician using impressions of the patient’s upper and lower teeth.
The process is simple and painless: the patient visits the clinic for two impressions (upper and lower), which takes about 5–7 minutes. These impressions are sent to the technician, who delivers the custom trays in 2–3 days.
The trays are filled with whitening gel and worn for a few hours to whiten the teeth. Depending on the concentration of the gel, trays can be used:
As the primary whitening method (instead of in-office whitening)
As a maintenance treatment after in-office whitening
Combination of Methods
For patients seeking maximum whitening results (e.g., a bride before her wedding), a combination of in-office and at-home whitening can be used.
In this case, in-office whitening is performed first, followed by at-home use of trays with whitening gel to achieve an even whiter shade.
This method is more time-consuming but produces the best possible results.
Results
How much whiter will my teeth get?
Results vary depending on the patient and the method used. Some patients respond quickly, seeing a noticeable difference after the first session, while others may require multiple sessions to achieve the desired shade. Generally, the more yellow the teeth, the more dramatic the results from the first session.
Does it hurt?
The procedure is completely painless, both for in-office whitening and tray whitening at home.
After in-office whitening, mild sensitivity may occur, described as brief cold sensations in the teeth. These usually subside within 2–3 days.
