What are inlays and onlays? How are they made?

When a tooth has extensive decay or damage that cannot be restored with a simple filling—but does not yet require a full crown—we choose an inlay or onlay.

Internal Whitening

In cases where a tooth has suffered dental trauma or as a result of root canal treatment, the tooth may appear darker than the adjacent teeth. It can present as a deep yellow or, in some cases, even grayish.

Through the internal whitening process, we can significantly improve the tooth’s color by applying a specialized bleaching method inside the tooth.

In these cases, the tooth must first undergo root canal treatment. Afterward, repeated sessions are performed where a whitening agent is placed inside the tooth for a certain period until the desired result is achieved.

First, the quality of the root canal treatment is evaluated. If it is satisfactory, the internal whitening procedure can proceed immediately. Otherwise, a high-quality root canal treatment must be performed before starting the internal whitening.

A case of extensive caries

In this case, we treated a young patient with extensive carious lesions—a characteristic example of hyperdontia. The causes were multifactorial: inadequate oral hygiene, frequent consumption of sugary drinks, and periods of reduced saliva flow.

The treatment plan was based on a holistic approach, aiming not only to restore functionality but also to improve aesthetics. It included:

What is post reconstruction?

This technique uses the root of the tooth as a support to “rebuild” the missing portion of the tooth.

What are the prerequisites for this technique?

The tooth must be root canal treated.
If a root canal already exists, its quality is assessed. If there are no issues, the post reconstruction can proceed immediately.
If the tooth has not been root canal treated, the root canal procedure is performed first, followed by the post reconstruction.
Additionally, the tooth, surrounding bone, and gums must be healthy, and there must be enough remaining tooth structure above the gum line to allow for a stable restoration.

What are the advantages of this method?

It is a cost-effective and safe restoration option compared to more expensive alternatives, such as extraction and implant placement.
Provides immediate aesthetic restoration in a single session.
Can serve as a temporary solution until the patient chooses a more permanent restoration, such as an implant or prosthetic crown.
